Long Island University

Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus offers more than 11,000 students 126 programs in over 50 undergraduate and a comparable number of graduate fields, including doctorates in clinical psychology and pharmaceutics. The Campus is made up of six schools: Liberal Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Health Professions, Nursing, and the College of Pharmacy. The Campus' cultural diversity, innovative academic spirit, NCAA Division 1 Blackbirds sports teams, and landscaped campus next to downtown Brooklyn's MetroTech revival area make the Brooklyn Campus a model of urban higher education. The Campus is located at the intersection of DeKalb and Flatbush Avenues, just a few blocks from MetroTech Center.

Founded in 1926 by Brooklyn civic leaders, the Campus sought from the start to include religious and racial minorities, admitting students solely on merit. It has come a long way from the days when it enrolled 312 students. Today, the Brooklyn campus student body numbers more than 11,000. In the past decade, while other universities lost students and cut programs, LIU’s Brooklyn Campus enrollment doubled and course offerings and student services increased significantly and credits success to their fine academic reputation, top-notch faculty, excellent facilities and personalized student advising.

In our 154th year we became affiliated with New York University and welcomed the dawn of a new age. As a member of NYU’s family of schools — what it calls a “Global Network University” — our students and faculty have access to research partners and perspectives from around the world.

And around the world there are countless 21st century problems — from harnessing energy to cleaning cities to growing economies — for our engineers, computer scientists, technology management experts, multimedia designers, and biochemists to solve. In these 50 years, our focus is the global information economy, health and wellness, and urban systems.

"The Construction College"

The Institute of Design and Construction was founded in 1947 by Vito Battista, R.A., a distinguished New York architect, who established the school in Downtown Brooklyn to give technical training in architecture and building construction to students who could not afford a four year professional education. The school pioneered the “A Work/Study Plan" as early as 1952. IDC’s present location on Flatbush Avenue Extension is a familiar landmark at the portal of Downtown Brooklyn’s new 16-acre MetroTech campus.

Every school claims to offer something special. At IDC, we believe that we offer students five special advantages.

First, with an IDC education, you can concentrate on your career. You take only those courses directly related to your major in Architectural or Building Construction Technology. Our AOS degrees do not require any liberal arts prerequisites.

Second, IDC’s courses of study are flexible and can meet your situation. You have the choice of either a five semester (27 month) day/evening sequence, or an evening school six-semester sequence (33 months) to earn your degree. With either plan, you can be working and earning while you study for your degree. Many of our graduates have completed their Bachelor’s degrees at leading public and private colleges and universities around the country. The Institute is particularly proud of the IDC graduates who have passed the Architect Registration Examination.

Third, IDC offers the advantage of a small school. In small classes, you receive personal attention from your instructors who know you and can take time to help you progress.

Fourth, professionals who are working in the field daily teach IDC courses. Our faculty, graduates of leading colleges and architectural schools, brings to the classroom the immediacy of “just from the office" experience. A working faculty also benefits the student by growing deep roots in the industry. Your instructors will form the beginning of a network of professional contacts to help you get ahead in business.

Fifth, IDC is affordable. Tuition is low and financial aid is available through state and federal programs for those students who qualify.

IDC offers Associate Degree programs in
Architectural Technology with majors in Building Design and Interior Design
Building Construction Technology

Architectural Technology in Building Design concentrates on the design and production of a total project.

Architectural Technology in Interior Design concentrates on the space planning and aesthetics of a building’s interior.

Building Construction Technology concentrates on the coordination, supervision and scheduling of construction projects.

IDC programs furnish students with a solid understanding of building design and construction. A student’s core curriculum requires mastery of blueprint reading, construction drawings, building materials, methods of construction and the use of computers.

Continuing Education Center:
IDC evening school is also a magnet for professionals working in architecture and construction. An undergraduate student in the evening classes may find himself, or herself, sitting next to an architect or contractor who is taking courses for personal and professional development.

Architectural License Review:
Since its inception, IDC has been offering courses, seminars and programs to prepare candidates for the ARE B the Architect Registration Examination (R.A. license). These programs are highly specialized, non-credit and non-degree oriented. The courses offered include a “Dry Run" for the Building Design and Site Design sections of the ARE.

With roots dating back to 1881, City Tech is a recognized national model for urban technological education and a pioneer in integrating technology into the teaching/learning experience. Through its Schools of Technology & Design, Professional Studies and Arts & Sciences, it offers an impressive array of 51 career-specific baccalaureate, associate and specialized certificate programs in many of the 21st century's fastest growing industries. Several of these programs are offered nowhere else in the New York City area and some are unique to the northeast region.

New bachelor's degree programs and program options in communication design, computer systems, facilities management, architectural technology, and travel and tourism join established baccalaureate programs in computer engineering technology, graphic arts production management, hospitality management, human services, legal assistant studies, occupational teacher education, technology teacher education and telecommunications technology to address the urgent and growing need for trained professionals in these vital areas. At City Tech education couples specialized technical instruction with broad education in the liberal arts and sciences, preparing graduates not just for immediate employment but for a lifelong career of professional advancement and intellectual growth.

The faculty, many recruited from business, industry and the professions, provide students with the benefit of their extensive real-world experience. The faculty's close ties to industry are a major asset to students, often leading to internships, research opportunities and employment. City Tech has produced nearly 65,000 graduates, most of whom have remained in the metropolitan New York area and contribute to its economic and professional vitality. Graduates include at least 1,000 corporate CEOs or owners of their own businesses.

Currently serving more than 11,000 degree students, the College has twice the enrollment of the largest of the eight State University of New York (SUNY) institutions identified as "colleges of technology." In addition, City Tech is home to another 9,000 students enrolled in an extensive array of adult education and workforce development programs. A recent study by the Wall Street-based Center for an Urban Future identifies City Tech and its Business & Industry Training Center as "one of CUNY's leading job training and business assistance centers with a strong set of programs that many employers have come to rely on."
